We spent our first night in Canada at Penticton, a beautiful area, two large lakes surrounded by steep hills covered with pine trees and rock. Okanagan Lake is a large deep lake in Okanagan Valley, 135 Km (84 miles) long and between 4 and 5 km (2 1/2 - 3 miles) wide, an area known for it's wineries, fruit and a thriving tourist area year around, well known for it's snow skiing. We left about 9:00 for our 251 mile drive to Big Country Campground and RV Park near the community of 100 Mile House. It was a very long 251 miles, we left the Okanagan Valley to head West and North through one mountain summit after another, it was a beautiful ride, with beautiful weather and not much traffic.
As we came down a steep mountain into Highland Valley we were astonished to see Highland Valley Copper, the largest open pit mine in Canada, it opened in 1962, it covers thousands of acres. We couldn't stop to take any pictures as we were hurtling down the mountain.
We stopped for lunch in Merritt then our first stop for fuel in Canada. YIKES!!!! We still had a half tank, it cost $200.00 for 148.258 Liters at $1.349, that of course is Canadian money, we didn't do the math to see how much it would be in American. Somethings are better just not knowing.
The drive from Merritt to 100 Mile House (several small towns are called Mile House with a number) wasn't as mountainous, much less stressful. We arrived at our campground about 3:30, tired and hot, the weather has been in the high 80's since we left Central Washington.
That's it for today, no pictures.
TTFN,
Gary and Pam
