This morning we caravaned (in cars) to MukTuk Adventures, a B & B about 20 minutes outside Whitehorse. The owner, Jeff, gave an hour presentation about their (140) sled dogs, dog sledding and the rules of the Iditerod and Yukon Quest races. The race rules are very strict for the dogs, all dogs get a vet check, nails must be trimmed, the fur on their pads trimmed and booties must be worn. Jeff was a lot of fun, many times he had to quit talking and tend to the dogs that were running around and getting into mischief. Then we got to walk around and meet the dogs that were tethered, they were all very friendly, many of us left the yard with hair all over us. They use several breeds for dog sledding, Alaska Huskies, Siberian Huskies and some rescues from the local shelter whose heritage is unknown. They all have something in common, they love to work. I was surprised at the fancy lunch they served us, appetizers of caribou sausage with rosemary, pieces of smoked salmon, followed by bison burgers with a nice salad and (my personal favorite) brownies and ice cream. Yum, yum yum! The lodge was a beautiful log building. Dinner and follies in the evening, what fun. Dinner was salad, roast beef with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots, dessert was several flavors of cake. The follies were a" kick," (pardon the pun" they singled out several members of our caravan to participate, including Gary, he was chosen along with another member of the audience to go on stage, first they took them back stage to put kilts and berets on them for their on stage debut dance. I was trying to video him but I was laughing so hard I couldn't hold the camera still. Fun program, all local talent, considering the town only has a population of 25,000 plus everyone had lovely voices.
July 1 Sunrise 4:01 Sunset 12:40
Today we had a LONG travel day, 337 miles, not only long but with a pot holes and frost heaves. Then it started to rain. We left about 8 and arrived at 4:00, sunny and in the 70's, Yea! We fueled up before going into the park, we put in 139.341 liters @ $1.389 for $193.45. The few RV parks in Dawson City are, let's just say "rustic". As you are coming into Dawson City there were many tailings from gold dredging in the 1800's. Dawson City, 1,900 is only 165 miles from the Arctic Circle, situated at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers. After settling in we took the 4.5 mile drive to the top of Midnight Dome, elevation 2,911, what a beautiful view especially of the rivers and their islands.
That's it for today, enjoy the pic's.
