A few musings about British Columbia and Yukon Territory; there is hardly any roadside litter, the people are tall and everyone is so civilized. Just saying. And I still haven't seen Sgt. Preston of the Yukon Mounted Police!
We had a free day, no early wake up call to hit the road. There is a lovely path from our RV park along the Klondike River to the confluence of the Yukon and all the way to the Ferry landing. It was "Luci's" day, we walked her from the Klondike River to the Ferry to get her tired. She's been cooped up way too much. It was a delightful walk plus we picked up several geo caches along the way. The Visitor Center has a promotion, if you pick up 4 in Dawson and the gold fields you get a prize. Wah hoo! We got two clip on pens perfect for geo cacheing. Cool, we had one before, very handy, but we lost it. We stopped at the Fire Museum on our way back from the ferry landing to the car, we saw a steam engine that cost $250,000 to refurbish. So beautiful. The weather was lovely today, about 75, perfect for a walk.
You would not believe the DIRTY rigs we've seen here in Dawson City, I was wondering if the road to Chicken was going to be that bad. I found out those cars are coming down the Dempster Hwy that travels north from here.
We had a 5:30 pm drivers meeting, tomorrow we finally get to Alaska, happy 4th of July. We take the ferry across the Yukon River to the Top of the World Highway to Chicken. The drive is only 107 miles but can possibly take 5-7 hours, which includes the wait for the ferry. The road is gravel, steep and very curvy. We'll see.
On our walk along the river we saw a sign for the Sough dough Restaurant with a big banner, fish and chips, halibut, salmon and cod. That sounded so good! After the meeting we headed for the restaurant. Well they were out of halibut, Gary doesn't like salmon so he got the cod. We skipped the fries, he chose the chowder and I had a salad. The chowder was salmon and we were charged extra for the substitutions, our server didn't tell us. Our dinner (mine was "ok") was less than satisfactory and it cost $51.00 for one piece of fish apiece and a beer plus tip. Oh well.
That's it for tonight, enjoy the pic's,
TTFN,
Gary and Pam
