I "whimped" out on the walking tour, a time out was needed. Gary went, I'm sorry I missed it! The guide was quite knowledgeable for only being in the Yukon 13 years. He pointed to a flag across the river, a hermit lives in that cave year around. Crazy. The old PO no longer functions, has been restored to look like it did during the gold rush days. During that time when the mail came in the postmaster would dump all the mail on the ground and everyone would paw through it finding theirs. I suppose even in the snow. In the back of the newspaper office are refurbished machines still used today. The owner of Lowe's Mortuary (Mr. Lowe I presume) would hire extra help during spring and summer to come dig extra graves so in the winter bodies could be buried immediately instead of waiting for the thaw. The bar in the Red Feather Saloon was completely refurbished to look like the original in the picture. The first floor of the Catholic Church was empty, Gary happened to notice a sign that the sanctuary was on the second floor. After lunch at the JJJ hotel, Gary went out to the Gold Dredge #4, it ran from 1913 to 1962, the town has tailings all over and rusted equipment everywhere. They found mostly gold dust and very small nuggets, people in town very seldom used real money but would pay for things with gold dust.
Two can can shows in one week, how fun. Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall and Saloon, again all local talent. The bartender at the hotel (where Gary had lunch) is a dancer. They have 3 shows a night, 8, 10 and 12 then she works during the day.
After we got back we took Luci for a walk at 10:30 at night, it's so strange to be light so late, right now it's almost midnight and it's still light.
That's it for tonight, enjoy the pic's.
TTFN,
Gary and Pam
